Newsworthy: Karen Walker's new Eyewear Campaign

Karen Walker and photographer Derek Henderson have been collaborating and making magic happen for some time now, but it is the latest eyewear campaign that really makes you sit up and take notice.

In support of the United Nations' International Trade Centre's Ethical Fashion Initiative, Kenyan artisans, who have recently been in the background creating screen-printed and beaded pouches, have been brought into the spotlight in celebration of their work.

The campaign features some of the Kenyan artisans as the face, to put a face to the hands that have been creating the pouches. The Ethical Fashion Initiative has been backed by other brands such as Vivienne Westwood and Sass & Bide, but none I believe will make as much of an impact as this.

The result is what you'd expect from a KW Eyewear campaign - a fun celebration of life, and the photos of course are absolutely stunning.

Twenty-Seven Names Flagship Store Opens in Wellington!

Yesterday morning, NZ cult-brand twenty-seven names opened the doors to their first store. An ex-gallery space on Vivian Street in Wellington, the shop's beautiful layout is an ode to the girls behind the brand, Rachel and Anjali's talent. With backgrounds in fine arts and fashion respectively, the result is a harmony of both arts; Rachel's graduate fine arts project of a ceramic lion and unicorn features as the centrepiece of the space, surrounded by framed sketches and embroidery pieces, graphic rugs and raw concrete floors. Not to mention the clothes.

The current range is separated by print, matched with pillows on the back wall - one of which I bought shortly after they opened (as their very first ever customer!).

This evening the designers stayed late, inviting anyone in to have a glass of wine and have a chat to celebrate the opening. I had a great chat to Rachel about the current industry, where the brand has came from and where it's going, and what inspires them to keep growing. Coming from a fine arts background, Rachel said she didn't specifically look for an ex-gallery when looking for a space for the store, but jumped at the chance when one came available. The opportunity to sell their clothes in an environment that gave the same experience as a gallery and truly showcased the clothes was an ideal.

I Love Ugly releases August collection

New Zealand mens cult label I Love Ugly has released their August collection of threads to their shops and online just a few days ago.

The new lot features a particularly nice Iceberg Anorak (NZ220), an update on the favourite Zespy trackies and a couple of sweet prints bound to be seen on quite a few bods around town soon.

A follow up to last month's White Lady series, these tees are super sassy (in a manly way of course)

NZFW 13 Designers Announced

The eagerly awaited New Zealand Fashion Week designer line-up was finally released yesterday, Sunday 11th August for the upcoming fashion festival and weekend. Only three weeks away, this years fashion week has had an overhaul and stepped up to the plate with some significant international names to top off the list.

This years fashion week is shorter, with only three days of trade and media shows and events, followed by a few days of consumer-driven events. 53 designers make up a combination of the entire week, some of which combining into group shows such as the NZ Weddings show. A number of smaller, edgier labels have made their way in, which will hopefully bring attention to fresh talent from around the country.

Newsworthy: fashion and art news and links from the last few days

  • If you happen to be in London, Kensington Palace opened it's latest exhibition last week 'Fashion Rules', offering a peak inside the royal wardrobes from all different styles and eras. Read The Telegraph's write-up for it here

  • Trinity is a performance show using interactive technology by Electronic Performers. The stage is transformed into a blank canvas; the dancer's bodies the paint brush. The result is hauntingly beautiful, accentuating movement and heightening senses. See a bit more info on My Modern Met here or see the full clip here

  • Vogue Australia wrote an interesting article explaining the importance and difference between pre-collections (resort & cruise) and ready-to-wear. I was pleased to see a mention of the true reason for the increase in the number of fashion seasons and the corporations responsible, and an increased interest in the industry overall. The speed of high-street distribution and turn-over influences consumers to want more, faster - an interesting article for a more in-depth discussion of this side was published back in January by The Guardian here

  • NZ brand Huffer released a video a couple of weeks back to "celebrate our culture, diversity and peoples different takes on old and new ideas" by exploring the infamous Karangahape Road in Auckland, speaking to different personalities about the significance of denim - an interesting way to explore the notion of high vs. low, both bums on the street and wearers of the highest designers wear denim jackets and jeans. Denim fits with every personality and environment
